Lady Catherine DeBurgh says this to Elizabeth Bennet when she refuses to say whether or not she is engaged to Mr Darcy - thus giving him some hope that she does indeed love him as if she completely refused this idea he would know she did not love him at all. Thus her pride allows for him to know here true feelings.
